Simple transaction practices to reduce the risk of card skimming

The following card usage best practices to reduce the risk of card skimming.

• Dip the Chip - if you have a chip card insert the card first to avoid swiping the card unnecessarily.
• Protect your PIN - shield it with your body, free hand or both
• Be alert - keep your card in your sight at all times during transactions to ensure your card is not swiped through a foreign device
• Check your receipts - ensure they display the correct amount, date and time
• Review statements regularly - report unauthorized transactions to your credit union immediately

The following specific examples can help reduce your risk of being skimmed.

• Avoid using ATMs with obstructed access to the keypad or display monitor, such as a poorly placed pamphlet holder.
• Keep your card in your sight at all times during transactions at full service vendors.
• Avoid using an ATM situated beside other ATMs displaying  'out of order' signage. Report  'out of order' ATMs to the financial institution ATM owner immediately.
• Avoid using a merchant PIN pad terminal bearing a 'Press Hard' sticky note.

Debit card users are protected by the Canadian Code of Practice for Consumer Debit Card Services which states that innocent victims of counterfeit debit fraud will be reimbursed by their issuing financial institution.
